Demystifying Quilting Terms

When you're new to quilting, there's so many words and phrases that are overwhelming. This page is a comprehensive and regularly updated list of terms used in Hot Stitch Studio patterns so you can always know what these words even mean.

B

  • Binding: folded fabric that is put all around the unfinished edge of the quilt to complete the quilt

N

  • Nesting (the seams): Aligning seams on the right sides with the seams pressed to opposite directions - this allows the seam to appear like a perfect line on the right side

P

  • Press: a way of ironing wherein you lift the iron up and down rather than "iron" side to side
  • Press seams open: on the wrong side of the fabric, spreading the seam apart and pressing down the middle
  • Press seams to the ___: intentionally setting the seam to one direction for best nesting of seams in final product

R

  • Right Sides Together (RST): align the fabrics with the right side or the most saturated printed side facing each other

S

  • Seam: the line of stitching connecting pieces of fabric together, commonly 1/4" in quilting
  • Sub cut: Subsequent smaller cuts from an initial cut of fabric

W

  • Width of Fabric (WOF): the measurement of the fabric form selvedge to selvedge

Y

  • Yardage: quilting fabric is commonly cut in yards with yardage referring to the amount of yards you'll need to complete the project
